poster design | grid exploration
completed may 2022
The objective of this project was to design two 16x24" posters using two very different grid techniques. The first poster's grid aligns every element to a 45°, 30°, or 60° angle. The second poster is to brakes that grid and creates a new grid in an unexpected way. The two posters highlight the contrast of modern and post modern design.
The design process for the posters started with a series of grid studies on 10x10" art boards. All of these studies follow a very modernist layout system. The next step was to layout the content, this time on 16x24" art boards, which is the final poster size. From there, I explored more options with type, color and shape to create the final design for the first poster. Since my posters are about earthquake survival, I wanted the type to feel chaotic as if it just went through the earthquake itself.
For the second poster, the first step was to create a new type of grid. Keeping the theme of chaos after an earthquake, I referenced how roads brake and crack in an earthquake's aftermath, and developed a grid to mimic that. The result is type laying on different planes, creating visual depth and the feeling of an earthquake.
