Awareness and education of food allergies in restaurants is severely lacking in the United States. How do we solve it? Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), believes that the only way to truly create a safer dining experience is through advocacy and changing legislation.
To make it easier, FARE made a Restaurant Legislation Toolkit to guide individuals on how to talk to their legislators, outline key talking points, model bill language, and comparison of food allergy laws across different states.
Having last been updated in 2016, so I was asked by Jason Linde, Senior Vice President, Advocacy, to provide updated information, a friendlier tone, and overall redesign of the toolkit.
The first half of the process was research. Learning what statistics of allergies have changed, what laws have updated, and what the current counter arguments of food allergy training in restaurants are. Once all the information was in place, it was time to start the design.
Following FARE's brand guidelines, I started with developing 3 different design systems. From there I created a typographic hierarchy and grid system in InDesign for organization and visual consistency.
The internship ended in May with the completion of the toolkit. The final design is 30 pages and 15 spreads with a table of contents, chapter openings and 2 infographics.
